Matthew Syed (3-time Commonwealth Games Champion, former English #1 and now esteemed best-selling author and journalist) recently wrote a very interesting article titled, ‘The secret of success in life and in sport – know yourself’

Underneath the article he wrote:

‘One error – and I have been guilty of this at times – is to suppose that there is a magic formula to success. Unfortunately, many players want to improve but don’t or won’t make the necessary changes that will make a big difference to better performance.

Many of you will have read about the differences between the ‘Fixed Mindset’ and the ‘Growth Mindset’ in athletes and the TTFit team are very much in the latter camp!!

So, what do players with a ‘Growth Mindset’ believe?

  1. Achievements and performance come from sheer hard work and a constant willingness to learn new things.
  2. Feedback is critical in order to help them improve, not simply when they are underperforming but also when playing well.
  3. Failures and defeats are ways to learn and improve from, and they will collaborate with other people and coaches to help them.
  4. Strengths and weaknesses should be reviewed after training and matches as they think of each experience as another opportunity to learn and work with a coach to improve their game.
